The Undergraduate GSSA Team Welcomes You
HOSTED BY: BAYLOR UNIVERSITY AND HARVARDÂ UNIVERSITY
About
GLOBAL SURGERY STUDENT ALLIANCE
GSSA is the national student-run global surgery working group located at medical schools and undergraduate institutions across the US. We believe that students of all disciplines are a valuable resource for the advancement of global surgery. We also believe that being unified in our efforts will help further our initiatives and can also facilitate more collaboration amongst overall global surgery efforts, both now and in the future. By exposing students to the field early on, we hope to educate, inspire and unite students through engagement and mentorship in global surgery.

She is also currently a Paul Farmer Global Surgery Research Associate at the Program for Global Surgery and Social Change, where she works primarily with Team India on projects related to gender equity, financial risk protection, and innovation.
Blake Hauser
MS2/ PHD2, HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL
Blake Hauser is a fourth-year MD-PhD student at Harvard Medical School from Atlanta, GA. Her interest in global surgery began while studying the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission in Lilongwe, Malawi as an undergraduate. She noticed that an incredible amount of resources had been dedicated to combating infectious diseases in Malawi, but that comparatively few resources were available to ensure that patients had access to adequate surgical care. After completing an undergraduate degree in Public Health and Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill, Blake pursued a Masters in Biological Sciences at the University of Cambridge and studied influenza evolution. She is currently earning a PhD in Biophysics with a research focus in structural virology, viral evolution, and immunogen design. Since beginning medical school, Blake became involved in GSSA first as a leader of the Harvard Medical School chapter and then as Vice President of Internal Affairs. She has worked on projects including the Northeast Global Surgery Hackathon, the establishment of the regional structure for GSSA chapters, and assisting with planning efforts for the Virginia and Utah Global Surgery Symposia. She currently serves as Co-Chair of GSSA.
